How to Get Involved

Step 1: Complete the Volunteer Interest Form below:

Step 2: A member of the First Tee staff will contact you to discuss your volunteer interest and next steps. Which includes the completion of the following:

  • Volunteer Application
  • Background Check ($20.50 fee to be covered by First Tee – Greater St. Louis)
  • SafeSport Training
  • Volunteer Agreement and Release

Step 3: Volunteer!

Time Commitment

Volunteer coaches can choose to participate in one or multiple program sessions. We ask that you communicate about any foreseen absences. Expectations are that volunteers commit to attending class weekly but we understand if one or two weeks are missed.

Typical Programming Schedule

Spring (March – May): Classes meet once a week for 8 weeks for 1-2 hours, depending on the level. Monday-Saturday.

Summer (June – August): Classes meet once or twice a week ranging for 1-2 hours, depending on the level. Sessions are 8 weeks throughout the summer. Monday – Saturday.

Fall (August– October): Classes meet once a week for 6 weeks for 1-2 hours, depending on the level. Monday-Saturday.

We will work with you to find a fit for your schedule. In addition to programming, we host golf scrambles where you can assist at a stand-alone event in one day.

General Info
  • We host golf course programs in Missouri at Eagle Springs Golf Course, Family Golf and Learning Center, The Highlands Golf Course, and Missouri Bluffs Golf Club and in Illinois at Grand Marais Golf Course, Shiloh Yorktown Golf Course, and Stonewolf Golf Club
  • No golf experience is required to volunteer with us. You just need a passion for golf and helping develop youth in our community!
  • Work with kids and teens ranging from 7-18 years old with skill levels from beginner to advanced.
  • Want to take it to the next level? Opportunities to become a First Tee Lead Coach are also available.
Volunteer Responsibilities

General:

  • Complete the following before volunteering:
  1. Volunteer Application
  2. Background Check (fee paid by First Tee)
  3. SafeSport Training

Be familiar with incident reporting and emergency/first aid procedures.

Expectations:

  • Ability to serve as “the model” of mature, responsible behavior to participants
  • An interest in the development of youth
  • An appreciation for the game of golf and its inherent life lessons
  • A ready smile and sense of humor

Professionalism: It is essential that primary attention be placed on the student’s safety and life skills development. Thus, we request that the use of cell phones be turned off or vibrate while volunteering. Please refrain from smoking and using inappropriate language/conversation while volunteering.

Pre-Class:

  • Review the class lesson plan and other info provided by the Lead Coach
  • Arrive 15 – 30 minutes early to sign in, participate in a pre-class briefing, and assist with class setup
  • Be prepared to manage student check-in and nametag distribution
  • Build rapport with the kids, reinforce the key concepts, and reinforce positive behaviors

During Class:

  • Assist with the warm-up & wrap-up activities
  • Monitor safety guidelines and procedures
  • Reinforce the golf instruction and class concepts from the lesson plan
  • Be an “encourager”
  • Ensure students are respecting the teaching facility

Post Class:

  • Help collect nametags, check participant Yardage Books, communicate with parents/guardians, & monitor safety
  • Manage late departures – ensure no student is left alone waiting for pick-up
  • Return training aids, equipment and supplies to storage (or for transport)
  • Debrief with the Lead Coach
